Joe Satriani: Phil Collen is a “Total Virtuoso”

When Joe Satriani—in addition to announcing his 16th solo album—What Happens Next—announced a G3 Tour featuring John Petrucci and Phil Collen, many (including many a Guitar World reader) scratched their heads at the choice of Collen, best known as the six-string ace for Def Leppard. Satriani recently—when speaking to Eddie Trunk—defended his choice of Collen, calling him a “total virtuoso.”

Joe Elliott Remembers Tom Petty

“I can’t say I knew Tom, although I did meet him twice, once to get his autograph backstage after I saw him open for Nils Lofgren at the Sheffield City Hall in 1978, and in a bowling alley of all places in 1983 when Def Leppard & Tom happened to be in the same town on the same night, but I’m incredibly saddened by the news of Tom Petty’s passing. I love that 1st album (that’s what he signed for me!), always have, always will, but I have to add that Full Moon Fever was played on an almost daily basis when Leppard were writing & recording the Adrenalize album. Through his work with the Heartbreakers and The Traveling Wilburys he’s left us with an incredible legacy to enjoy forever, it’s such a shame he has left us way before his time.

RIP Tom, safe travels into the Great Wide Open…”

“The Hysteria Files with Phil Collen” Premiere

Introducing the new series: “The Hysteria Files with Phil Collen”

Via Ultimate Classic Rock: Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen takes fans on a trip back in time to the genesis of some of the biggest hits from the group’s Hysteria album in a new video interview conducted to commemorate the recent deluxe edition reissue of the classic LP.

Shot at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, California, Phil Collen takes a walk down memory lane as he re-visits the making of Hysteria 30 years later. Stay tuned for more videos coming soon!

In this clip, which is making its exclusive premiere above, Collen — toting a guitar outfitted with a GoPro camera so you can see exactly what he’s doing — looks back on a handful of the songs Def Leppard slaved over during the years it took to finish Hysteria. His comments shed a light on everything from the influences they absorbed while writing the songs — like “Armageddon It,” which Collen says was inspired by T. Rex, and “Love Bites,” which he recalls initially sounding like an Eagles song — to the incredible lengths they pursued to achieve sonic perfection.
